MB ChB FRACS
David graduated MB ChB from the University of Cape Town Medical School in 1983, and completed his internship at King Edward hospital. After migrating to Australia in 1985, he commenced basic surgical training in Tasmania in 1986. He secured an Advanced Training position in Hobart, and completed surgical training in Melbourne in 1994, obtaining his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 1995.
Whilst enjoying 6 years of General Surgical practice on the NSW South Coast, David developed an interest in Breast Surgery. He conducted BreastScreen Assessment clinics in the ACT, and participated in the Multidisciplinary management of breast cancer patients on the coast. He moved to Sydney in 2001 to pursue his interest and develop new skills in Breast Cancer Surgery. After obtaining a Post Fellowship training position at the Westmead Breast Cancer Institute, he completed his Specialist training in 2003.
David was appointed to the Breast Unit at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) and Prince of Wales Hospitals (POW) in 2004, and joined a team of highly skilled clinicians dedicated to the multidisciplinary management of patients with breast disease. A comprehensive service is provided to both public and private patients by surgeons, radiologists, physicians, nurses, oncologists, psychologist, radiographers and sonographers, and lactation consultants.
David has appointments with BreastScreen Australia, and the Sydney Breast Clinic (SBC), where he conducts Breast Health Assessments and BreastScreen Assessment and Results clinics. High Risk clinics are conducted at SBC and at the NSW Breast Clinic at RHW. Private consulting rooms are located in Prince of Wales Private hospital. Minor procedures and Ultrasound guided biopsies can be performed in rooms. He operates at RHW and POW hospitals, and St Luke’s and POW Private hospitals.
Dr Charon Western

Charon graduated from Adelaide University in 1991 and completed her internship in 1992 at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. She moved to Sydney in 1993 and spent 2 years gaining valuable experience in teaching hospitals in Sydney. She commenced General Practice training in 1994 and received the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners in 1996.
Charon developed an interest in Women’s Health and in 1996 accepted a position at the Sydney Breast Clinic where she gained 12 years of experience and contributed to the training of many other breast physicians and other staff members. She received the Fellowship of the Australasian Society of Breast Physicians in 2004. She has a wide range of experience in the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast disease and has broad experience in the performance and evaluation of fine needle and core biopsies of the breast which she is able to perform in the rooms.
Charon was appointed a VMO Breast Physician at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 2006 and also has private consulting rooms at Strathfield Breast Centre and Northern Endocrine and Breast Surgery Centre in St Leonards.
Charon works closely with all members of the multidisciplinary team in her management of patients with breast disease and has extensive experience in clinical breast examination, mammography interpretation, ultrasound performance and interpretation and counselling skills.
Tania Luke RN

Tania graduated with Bachelor of Nursing from Charles Sturt University Bathurst in 2001 after spending many years working as an Enrolled Nurse in a country hospital. She continued to work in the Operating Theatre developing competency in all aspects of operating theatre nursing. Tania undertook post-graduate training in Perioperative Nursing in 2003 at the University of Technology, Sydney. Tania is currently undertaking a Masters in Breast Cancer Nursing through La Trobe University in Victoria.
Tania began working for Specialist Breast Care in 2003 as the Practice Manager and Registered Nurse. Her role encompasses all aspects of medical practice management and reception, as well as assisting Dr Thomson in the operating theatre, and Dr Western with all in-room procedures. Tania is responsible for liaising between all members of the multidisciplinary team involved in the management of Breast Cancer patients and is therefore very capable at dealing with your enquiries regarding your treatment regimes. Tania is available to you as one of our patients, to assist you in understanding your treatment and to provide you with support and information when required. Tania has an excellent understanding of Medicare and Private fund billing procedures and is able to assist you in understanding your fees.
Tania maintains a close working relationship with the Breast Care Nurse, Gill Neal, and through her she can organise access to a wide range of support services, including psychologist visits, for you whilst you are undergoing your treatment.
Tania is registered with the NSW Nurses & Midwives Registration Board and is a member of the Australian Association of Practice Managers. Through these bodies she ensures that Specialist Breast Care is meeting all current standards regarding your privacy and your care.
