After your breast surgery

Wound management

After your surgery you will have a waterproof dressing which you should keep in place until you see Dr Forsyth at your post op appointment. This will usually be two weeks after your surgery.

You can shower after your surgery and pat your dressing dry. You should avoid soaking in a bath and swimming until Dr Forsyth advises.

Supportive Bra

Dr Forsyth recommends you have a soft, supportive bra to wear after your surgery. This helps reduce swelling and pain. If you are having a reduction mammaplasty or reconstruction Dr Forsyth will advise you on the specific bra you will need to purchase prior to surgery.

Drains

After some procedures you will have a drain. This will usually stay in place when you go home and you will be educated on how to care for your drain. Some patients may require a community nurse to help manage their drain and this will be arranged prior to discharge from the hospital.

Scar massage

Massaging your scar can soften and help reduce the appearance of the scar. Dr Forsyth will advise you on when to start this at your post op appointment. This will vary depending on your wound healing. You should massage your scar for 2 minutes a day with any moisturiser or oil that you prefer. You should continue to do this for a minimum of three months.
