Breast Reconstruction

A breast reconstruction is an operation that recreates a breast shape on the chest wall after a mastectomy. Reconstruction is an option for most women after they have a mastectomy and Dr Forsyth strongly encourages her patients to consider reconstruction.

There are different types of reconstruction. For some women a particular type of reconstruction might be more suitable depending on your body shape, breast shape and size, medical conditions, and the expected treatment you may require for your breast cancer. For others, it may be a personal preference. Dr Forsyth works closely with her Plastic Surgery colleagues to counsel you on the best option for you.

Implant based reconstruction: recreation of the breast with a silicone based implant. Dr Forsyth performs her own implant based reconstruction.

Tissue based reconstruction: recreation of the breast with your own tissue. Your abdominal skin and fat are most commonly used for this type of reconstruction. Dr Forsyth works with a Plastic Surgeon who will perform this procedure following your mastectomy

There are advantages and disadvantages of both techniques and Dr Forsyth will discuss these with you during your consultation.
