Mastitis

Mastitis is an inflammation or infection of the breast. It most commonly occurs in women who are breast feeding but can also occur in non breast feeding women. The symptoms of mastitis include pain, redness, warmth, and sometimes an associated lump. You may also have a fever and feel generally unwell.

You should see your GP or Breast Specialist as soon as possible if you develop the above symptoms. You will likely require antibiotic treatment and in some instances, drainage of an underlying abscess with a small needle.

It is important that your doctor ensures that all of the above breast changes completely resolve following an episode of mastitis. This is usually confirmed with a clinical examination and an ultrasound.
