Hookwire Localised Breast Excision

If you require surgery for a breast lesion that cannot be felt, you will need to have a guidewire inserted into the breast on the morning of your surgery. This is performed by a radiologist under ultrasound or mammogram guidance. It is a similar procedure to a biopsy and is performed after an injection of local anaesthetic. The wire marks the position of the breast lesion that needs excision and guides Dr Forsyth to this area during the surgery.

Hookwires can be inserted for both benign and malignant breast lesions.
