Mastectomy

A mastectomy involves removal of the breast. There are different types of mastectomy which can be performed with or without a reconstruction. Dr Forsyth will discuss the techniques that are appropriate for you. She will also discuss reconstructive options with you.

Simple mastectomy: removal of the breast including most of the skin and nipple. You will be left with a flat chest and a scar that extends from your sternum to under your arm. Many women will wear a prosthesis in their bra after this procedure.

Skin sparing mastectomy: This technique involves removal of the breast and nipple, but preservation of the skin that envelopes the breast. This procedure is performed with a reconstruction.

Nipple sparing mastectomy: This technique involves removal of the breast with preservation of both the skin and nipple. This procedure is performed with a reconstruction.

A mastectomy is performed under a general anaesthetic. The technique that is used, including the type of reconstruction, will determine the length of the operation and the length of your hospital stay. You will have at least one drain placed at the time of your surgery that will remain in place when you go home. It will likely be removed 1-2 weeks after the surgery.  You will have a waterproof dressing and will be able to shower after the surgery. Dr Forsyth will advise you on the post operative bra that you will need to purchase and wear after the surgery.

Recovery

You will need at least a week off work (longer if a reconstruction is performed) depending on the type of surgery you have. You should avoid soaking in a bath, swimming, heavy lifting, and strenuous exercise until your post op appointment with Dr Forsyth. She will discuss your pathology results, return to work and activity plan, and scar management at this appointment.
